It only took more than 100 years, but the people who run golf finally got it right. This week they announced that golfers will no longer be penalized if their ball moves — whether due to wind or a shift in the grass or an earthquake or large rodents or whatever — after it has been addressed.
Incidents involving Rory McElroy and Webb Simpson, who were given one-shot penalties this year because the ball moved (even though they didn't touch it), helped build a case against the rule.
That means one of the dumbest rules in sports is gone.
One down, dozens more to go.
Don't you wish other sports would come to their senses?
Why does the World Series have two sets of rules for pitchers' at-bats ?— one for games played on American League fields and one for games played on National League fields?
Why does basketball allow teams to foul for profit instead of giving them a choice between free throws and ball possession at the end of a game ?— or the free throws and possession?
Why does college football choose its champions the same way we choose U.S. presidents?
Why has the NFL ruled that in order for a receiver to be granted a catch he not only must have both feet in bounds with possession of the ball, but he has to hang onto the ball after he hits the ground out of bounds — and then pretty much hold onto it until he gets to the postgame shower? Didn't he have possession of it when he was in-bounds?
Why do soccer games continue even after the 90th minute has expired and only the officials know how long the game will continue after they have calculated all the delays during regulation time? Can't they let the rest of us in on the secret?
Why does the NBA allow so many timeouts late in the game, making the final two minutes last about a half-hour and forcing fans to watch countless stops in the action?
Why does the NHL award points for losses in overtime? A loss is a loss, isn't it?
And don't even get me started about college football's anti-celebration rule.
But here's the rule I really want to see changed.
Can we all agree that football's extra-point kicks are the most boring moment in sports?
How boring?
More boring than soccer.
