Last meeting: Oct. 1, 2010, Duchesne 54, Monument Valley 0
Lopsided football games have been quite common through the years in the 1A state tournament, and that's what everyone expects when Duchesne hosts Monument Valley this Saturday at 2 p.m.
Defending state champion Duchesne is 9-0 and has shut out three straight opponents. Monument Valley is 5-4, but all of those victories have come against out-of-state teams and Whitehorse. Against Monticello and Milford earlier this year, Monument Valley lost by a combined 106-0.
When Duchesne and Monument Valley met in the regular season last year, the Eagles won 54-0 — which was also the halftime score.
This week's first-round playoff game figures to be much of the same, but for Duchesne coach Billy Hoopes and Monument Valley coach Powers Whiskers, they believe the game can still be beneficial.
"We're pretty excited about being in the playoffs. We know we're against the odds," said Whiskers. "Just as long as the boys come out and compete, that's all I'm asking of them."
As for Hoopes, whose team has enjoyed a 31.9-point average margin of victory this season, he wants to see a more efficient performance than what he saw in last week's victory over Altamont. Even though the Eagles won 35-0, there were areas Hoopes wasn't please with.
"The other night we didn't exactly play as well as we would've liked to, we'd like to get back to playing better. It doesn't matter how long they play. It doesn't matter who they're playing," said Hoopes.
He's not worried about his players taking the game lightly, either.
"Being fired up is part of playing football on Friday night. It doesn't matter how long you play, you see crazy things happening all the time," said Hoopes.
With 42-0 victories over both Monticello and Rich, arguably the two other top teams in 1A this year, it might take something crazy for the Eagles not to claim their second straight state championship.
The Duchesne/Monument Valley winner faces the Rich/Diamond Ranch winner at Wasatch High School in the 1A semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 5, at 11 a.m.
