Sydney Nelson Smith1934 ~ 2011Our wonderful, bright, gentle, courageous wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and friend passed away peacefully in Provo, Utah on September 16, 2011. She was born in Logan, Utah to Wilmar Nelson and Helen Hulme Nelson on June 20, 1934. She married her sweetheart, Richard Thomas Smith on September 14, 1954 in the Logan, Utah Temple. She attended Utah State University, and was a lifelong learner. She and Richard moved to Grand Junction in 1963. She loved her years working at Mesa College in both Administration and the Athletic Department, and was a surrogate Mom to more than a few of the Mesa athletes. Within this gentle woman was a warrior, and her courage and fight in the battle for her life would rival that of the toughest Mesa football player. She was a yearly fixture down the first base line through 46 Junior College World Series tournaments, and attended again this year, despite her physical limitations. The best seat in the stadium can now be hers. She was an avid Rockies fan, and never hesitated to call them and give them a piece of her mind. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, had many varied callings, and served with unconditional love and dedication. Many lifelong bonds and friendships were forged through her service. Age mattered not, as she treasured young and old. She was proud of her pioneer heritage, and was honored to be a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. She will be greatly missed, but always remembered, by her husband, children, grandchildren, sister, many nieces, nephews and friends who have treasured their time with her. Her beautiful spirit will always be part of us and we thank her for her influence that has made us into strong, capable, loving people. We want to thank her for the life lessons she has taught us. She is an excellent example of the power and influence one good woman can have over so many. She is survived by her husband Richard, daughters Suzanne Hafey (Jim Griffith) and Lynne Shumway (Casey), sons Jeff Smith (Mandy), Steve Smith, Alan Smith (Hannah Shields), Craig Smith (Holly), 11 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, sister Judy Kemp (David), brother in law Carl Fonnesbeck, and sister in law Ruth Thomson (Ariel). Funeral services were held Tuesday September 20 at the Grand Junction West LDS Stake Center. Online condolences at www.callahan-edfast.com
