Obituary: CHRISTENSEN, J. BRUCE

J. Bruce ChristensenMarch 9, 1925 ~ Oct. 7, 2011J. Bruce Christensen (aged 86), beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away in Orem, Utah, on October 7, 2011.Born to Seymour E. and Iva Deaun Larsen Christensen, he grew up in Ephraim, Utah, working on a family farm, herding sheep, working the fields with teams of horses, and transitioning to the operation and maintenance of motorized farm machinery. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in stations in California and Arizona. He later served a mission to Denmark and maintained his Danish language skills over the years.He married Lila Jean Asay March 16, 1951 and later divorced. While Bruce and Lila were raising six children, he worked many years with his father on the Ephraim family farm, then returned to Utah State University to earn a BA Degree and teaching certificate, and worked 2 years in secondary education. He then earned a Masters Degree at University of Utah in Social Work and worked in Provo, Utah, as a social worker specializing in geriatric care, until retiring in 1988. Bruce married Zoe James in November 1991. They were blessed to share nearly 20 years together before his death, living most of those years in Pleasant Grove, Utah, and the last 10 months caring for each other at the Summerfield Manor Retirement Center in Orem. He enjoyed being a stepfather to Zoe's children: Robert (Linda), Susan Jensen (Gary), Bruce James (JoAnn), Keith James (Beth), Russell James (Kathy), and Neal James (Lisa), who survive him, as well as Zoe's 20 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, S. Kent Christensen, infant sister Sarah Christensen, and two infant granddaughters. He is survived by his wife Zoe Christensen; sisters Gwenneth Christensen (Ogden), Nola Jones (Myron) (Malad, ID), and Deaun Bishop (St. George); children Neal B. Christensen (Ola) Monroe, UT, Val J. Christensen (Lauralee) Bountiful, UT, Ray L. Christensen (Deborah) Orem, UT, Evan S. Christensen (Jean) Hot Springs, SD, Boyd A. Christensen (Natalie) Neosho, MO, and Jeaneen Bingham (John) Provo, UT; as well as 56 grandchildren, and 44 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Bruce loved woodworking and always maintained a home wood shop where he conceived and constructed various projects for the enjoyment of others including a full-sized, beautiful pool table, rocking chairs, bicycles, swing sets, doll furniture, picture frames, etc. He also enjoyed residential remodeling and providing handyman services, most often on a volunteer basis. He was always active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in various callings including missionary, stake missionary, stake seventies leader, High Councilor, Temple Worker and Home Teacher. He especially enjoyed working on church welfare farms and orchards, and spent thousands of hours in selfless service and teaching his children the joys of such service. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 13, 2011, at the Orchard Ward, 828 S. Locust Ave, Pleasant Grove, Utah, with graveside services in Ephraim, Ut., on Thursday afternoon. A viewing will be held prior to the funeral from 10:00-10:45 a.m. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.olpinmortuary.com.
