Prep baseball team wins tourney

Mt. West 2013, a team comprised of some of state's top high school juniors, won the the 2011 Perfect Game/EvoShield National Underclass Championship on Monday.

Mt. West 2013 defeated the So Cal Bombers 7-6 in the championship game. Riverton High's Tanner Draper was the tournament MVP as he threw a no-hitter in pool play with 15 strikeouts, and followed that up with six shutout innings in the semifinals.

Alta High's Brett Snyder earned the tournament's Most Valuable Pitcher award as he threw a two-hit shutout in a 3-0 win over an Arizona team in the quarterfinals.

Against the Bombers in the championship game, Bingham catcher Jake Druce went 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Davis catcher/leftfielder Bronson Larson went 3-for-3 with four RBIs and scored two runs. Draper had two RBI singles. Fremont's Brody Rich got the team out of a jam in the sixth, and retired the side in the seventh to save the victory.

Others players on Mt. West 2013 are Cedar's Hunter Low, Syracuse's Morain Sawyer, Syracuse's Jayden Bearnson, Pleasant Grove's McKay Lewis, Alta's Trey Thayer, Park City's Mark Trevino, Rowland Hall's Scott Silverstein and Alta's Devin Relf. The team was coached by Jeff Bearnson and Murph Norris.

WILLIAMS EARNS INVITATION: Thanks to his stellar play at the National Team Identification Series in Cary, N.C., earlier this month, Bingham outfielder Connor Williams has earned an invitation to play on Team USA's under-18 trial team. Williams batted .345 with nine doubles, three triples and six home runs for the state champion Miners as a junior last season.
