Leaving on May 1, 1834, a company of about 20 men and baggage wagons were the first to begin the journey known as Zion's Camp.

Joseph Smith and a number of others did not leave Kirtland, Ohio, until May 5. That evening, he and his company spent the night in a barn belonging to a Mr. Ford in Streetsboro, Portage County, Ohio. The barn seen in this view is located in Streetsboro. Even though it postdates Zion's Camp, it is reminiscent of the fact that the young Prophet-leader stayed in this area on the first night of his journey.

The following day, the Prophet and his party joined the participants at New Portage, where he officially organized the camp.
