Esther Louise Rueckert Burbidge1913 ~ 2011Esther Louise Rueckert Burbidge finished life's race well on September 19, 2011 in Holladay, Utah surrounded by her family. She was born in Salt Lake City, Utah to Georg Friedrich Ludwig Rueckert and Auguste Johanne Marie Spilker on November 8, 1913, and was the youngest of seven children. Esther attended Riverside Elementary and Jordan Junior High Schools and graduated from LDS High School. She attended the University of Utah graduating in 1935. She was a member of the award winning University debate team and involved herself in theater where she was directed by Maude Mae Babcock in the lead role of the 1934 Varsity Play. Following graduation, she met Grant Burbidge at a church dance held at the Harold B. Lee Hall. They courted and were married on September 14, 1939 in the Salt Lake Temple. They were blessed with four children. Throughout her life, Esther was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in various positions in the 26th Ward, Pioneer Stake and the Holladay 14th Ward of the Holladay Stake. She was an exhaustive genealogist. Her continuous study of scriptures and the life of the Savior provided endless teaching moments with her family. With her husband, she faithfully served as he presided over the West Spanish American Mission of the Church from 1961 until 1965. Upon their return, she began a career as a social worker in the foster home placement program for Social Services in Salt Lake County. Throughout her life, she was active in civic and community matters. During her husband's political career, she was supportive and an active campaigner. In 1956, she served as president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Utah Municipal League. She and her husband were successful in starting and running several small business ventures and always acknowledged gratitude for the many blessings received. She is survived by her children, Grant R. "Rick" (Ruth) Burbidge, Kathleen (Grant) Peterson, Brinton R. (Nancy) Burbidge and Milton R. (Cathy) Burbidge, 26 grandchildren and 78 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, her parents, two brothers, four sisters and one great grandson.Funeral services will be Friday September 23, 2011 at 12:00 noon at the Holladay 14th Ward, 4917 So. Viewmont, Holladay, Utah. A viewing will be held on Thursday, September 22, 2011 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley, 1007 W. South Jordan Pkwy. and from 10:30-11:30 Friday at the church. Interment will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery. The family would like to express thanks to the members of the Holladay 7th Branch and the care givers at Sunrise Assisted Living for their kind and faithful service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Missionary Fund or the Perpetual Education fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
