Roland Wolfgang Matthes1913 ~ 2011Our beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather, passed peacefully into the loving arms of his Heavenly Father on September 13, 2011. Roland Wolfgang Matthes was born on April 23, 1913 to Rudolf and Anna Matthes in Annaberg, Germany.Roland was an exemplary student. He was also a member of the christian boy scouts where he enjoyed lifelong friendships. He was trained as an Artistic Book binder before bookbinding became automated. He went on to receive training as a nurse where he found his life long passion to serve others. For four years he served as a medic in a combat unit during World War II on the Russian Front. While in a refugee camp he met Ilse Bruckner; the love of his life and future mother of his four children. They immigrated to the United States, and in 1957 moved the family to Minnesota. In 1969 they moved to Salt Lake City where he worked at the VA Medical Center. He retired in 1985 at the age of 72. In 2002, he lost his life time partner after 50 years of marriage and was deeply touched. He found joy through his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He never lost his gift to encourage and enjoy the company of others. He blessed the lives of everyone he met. He felt blessed for his long life "never worrying", putting himself in God's hands. He is survived by six children, Wolfgang, Gudrun Keil-Rock (Helmut), Antje Lund (David), Hans (Polly), Karl (Kathleen), and Ulrich (JoAnna), and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
