Wilford Garth Ruff 1927~2011

Wilford Garth Ruff passed away on July 25th, 2011, he was 83 years old. "Garth" was born August 22, 1927 to Wilford "Bish" Ruff and Viola Whitaker Ruff in Castle Gate, Utah. He attended East High School in Salt Lake City. He was a World War II Veteran, entering the Marine Corps in 1944 at age 17, where he served with the US Occupational Forces in China. After his military discharge, he married Katharine Joyce Crane on January 12, 1947. They had four children, Steve, Mark, Ron and Alison. He worked for the US Department of Defense at Hill Air Force Base until his retirement. After his retirement, he served as a consultant to TRW in Pennsylvania until 1984. In addition, he coached many of his son's little league teams, served as Scout Master and was an active member of Wasatch Presbyterian Church. He served as an elder and, with his wife Joyce, was active in Mariners. He was a member of Progress Lodge #22 Order of Free Masons. Garth was known for an ability to fix anything mechanical. He was an avid golfer who also enjoyed hunting, fishing and travel, as well as time with his grandchildren. In recent years, he made a return trip to China and attended the Ryder Cup in Ireland with his son. He is survived by his children, R. Mark Ruff (Margee), Salt Lake City; Ronald Ruff MD (Jenifer), Salt Lake City and Alison Nicholson (Nate), Hillsboro, OR; daughter-in-law, Janie Ruff; grandchildren, Michael Ruff, Jim Ruff, Jennifer Ruff, Andrew Ruff, Meredith Ruff, Steven Nicholson and Ryan Nicholson. He is preceded in death by his wife Joyce and oldest son, Steven. A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 12th at 1:00 p.m. at Wasatch Presbyterian Church, 1626 East 1700 South, Salt Lake City, Utah.
