Catherine Elizabeth Hawkins 1924 ~ 2011

Catherine Elizabeth Hawkins passed away peacefully at her home in Salt Lake City on May 29, 2011. She was born in Ridge Farm, Illinois on April 24, 1924 to Floyd Rafferty and Mary Louise Baum. Cathy met her husband Bert Hawkins in her sophomore year of high school and they were married three months after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and at that time moved to Southern California. Being an only child she loved her extended family as her husband was the second to the youngest of 10 children. As the years went by she became very close to all of her brothers and sisters-in-law. Cathy began working for AT&T in 1952 and retired in 1986. In 1958 she became one of the first women promoted into management in a predominately "male" oriented organization. In 1993 Cathy and Bert moved from San Diego to Cedar City, Utah and began the happiest seven years of their life together. In 1994 at the age of 70 they were baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Bert passed away in June of 2000 and four years later Cathy moved to Salt Lake City to live with her daughter Suzanne. Cathy is survived by her children Jacqueline (Jim) Sultana, Suzanne Koehler, Keith (Sandy); five grandchildren and eight great-grand-children along with sisters-in-law Gladys Fitzsimmons, Barbara Hawkins and Virginia Hawkins. Cathy was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son-in-law Edward Koehler, grandson David and many beloved brothers and sisters-in -law. She will be missed; always loved and forever remembered. Funeral services will be held Monday, June 6, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Salt Lake Ensign Stake Center, 135 A Street. There will be a viewing on Sunday evening from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Salt Lake City. Burial will be at the Cedar City Cemetery on Tuesday, June 7 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humanitarian Aid Fund, Perpetual Education Fund, or to a charity of your choice.
