TRACK AND FIELD: Alyssa Abbott of the University of Utah track & field team has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII Track and Field and Cross Country First Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). She has now received Academic All-District honors four consecutive years.
Abbott graduated last month, completing her undergraduate studies with a 3.89 GPA while obtaining a degree in Exercise and Sport Science.
At the 2011 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Championships, Abbott garnered all-conference honors for her performance in the 1,500m with a time of 4:29.90 to finish second overall.
Abbott won the 2010 MWC 1,500-meter title and ended the first round of the NCAA Preliminary by taking third place in her heat and 12th overall with a time of 4:24.43. Abbott went on to take ninth place in her heat and 16th place overall in the NCAA quarterfinals, crossing the finish line in 4:26.30.
In 2009, Abbott was named to the USTFCCCA Division I Scholar Athlete of the Year list and is a three-time NCAA West Region qualifier. During the cross country season, Abbott qualified for the NCAA Cross Country Championships after placing ninth at the region championships. Abbott finished fourth at the MWC Championships to earn first-team All-MWC honors.
Utah will be represented at the NCAA National Championships by Amanda Mergaert in the 1,500m race in Des Moines, Iowa, beginning June 8.
