BASEBALL: On the heels of Dixie State College's second Pacific West Conference championship in the last three years, two entities recognized junior infielder Tyson Littlewood with spots on their postseason West Region teams.
Littlewood earned spots on the 2011 Daktronics, Inc. Division II All-West Region Baseball Second Team and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) West Region Second Team.
Also honored by the NCBWA were junior catcher Joe Andrade and junior pitcher Kyle DiMartino - both receiving honorable mentions.
Littlewood had phenomenal offensive stats this season for the Red Storm. He led the PacWest in slugging (.639), on-base percentage (.475), runs scored (46), RBI (51), home runs (11), total bases (99) and walks (37), and he ranked fourth in base hits with 54. Littlewood finished the year sixth in hitting, producing a .348 average in 47 starts. He went 54 for 155 with 12 doubles.
At the plate, Andrade hit .294 in 43 games and 40 starts, recording 42 hits, 16 runs, 44 RBI, 16 doubles and two homers. He posted a .462 slugging rate and a .368 on-base mark, going 37 for 127 with 39 runs, 14 RBI, six doubles and 23 walks. He had a .409 on-base average.
DiMartino burst on the scene with a 1.45 earned run average in 22 appearances as a reliever. He produced a 4-0 record with three saves, striking out 47 over 43.1 innings of action. He allowed just seven earned runs, five extra-base hits and a .190 batting average while stalking the mound.
The Red Storm won the PWC by two games over Hawaii Pacific and was the only team to break through the 30-win barrier in the league.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Dixie State College of Utah head women's basketball coach Angie Kristensen announced Monday the signing of two players — forward Qorreah Joice from Los Angeles and center Becca Thomas from Riverside, Calif. Both will enter DSC in the fall of 2011 as junior transfers.
A 6-0 forward, Joice averaged 10 points and six rebounds in 31 games for Mount San Antonio College, a final four squad in the California junior college ranks. The Mounties finished the year with a 29-4 record including a sparkling 15-1 mark inside the South Coast Conference. Joice shot 50.4-percent from the floor and pulled down 158 total rebounds, including 71 on the offensive glass. She was named to the SCC Second Team in her sophomore season.
"Qorreah will make an immediate impact here at Dixie State," said Kristensen. "She is an all around good basketball player. She can play inside and out. She is very smart with a great feel for the game. Qorreah comes from a great junior college program in Mount SAC, who has a strong tradition of winning. Qorreah is going to be a very effective player in our motion offense and is exactly the player we were looking to sign at forward."
Thomas, a 6-2 center, is a Division-I transfer from Santa Clara University. In two seasons, Thomas played in 16 games for the Broncos. Her career high in points came against the University of San Francisco on January 23, 2010 with four. Thomas was a prep standout at Redwood High School in Visalia, Calif. She earned team MVP honors her senior season. Her high school career totals included 1,106 points, 841 rebounds and 220 blocks. Thomas also played volleyball and ran track at Redwood.
"We knew we needed to find an impact player at center and we got just that with Becca," Kristensen said. "She is a perfect fit for our system! With her athleticism and length, she will make an immediate impact in the Pacific West Conference. We are very fortunate she decided to continue her playing career at Dixie State."
Dixie State finished last season with a 24-4 record after advancing to the program's first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Red Storm were second in the Pacific-10 conference and were ranked No. 17 in the final USA Today/ESPN Division II Coaches Poll.
