Glenn Beck, Mormonism attacked by Bill Keller, minister who targeted Mitt Romney
Bill Keller, the controversial Liveprayer.com Internet minister who once announced, "If you vote for Mitt Romney, you are voting for Satan!" has turned his attention to another Mormon in a new press release today, Fox News television and radio personality Glenn Beck.
Keller is calling Glenn Beck's upcoming August "Restoring Courage" rally in Israel "his latest scam on the Christian community, and an exploitation of Israel."
Keller's press release says he "takes the evangelical position that Mormon doctrine is 100 percent inconsistent with Biblical Christianity and that a Mormon is no more a Christian than a Muslim is."
Keller was just getting started. The release states that "Mormon cult member Beck has morphed his media conglomerate from sharing a conservative political ideology into a quasi-spiritual movement that makes him tens of millions of dollars by brainwashing the watered-down, compromised and Biblically illiterate Christian community who has bought into the lie that Mormons are another strand of Christianity."
The release said "high-profile Christians like David Barton, James Robison, John Hagee and others who are more than willing to sell out the faith to stand next to Beck for whatever short-term exposure and monetary gain they receive for credibility."
Keller claims, "Beck is helping to lead many innocent souls into the lies of the Mormon cult and their souls to hell." He doesn't give any statistics on this, nor does he consider people who may have rejected The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints because of Beck's political positions.
Mormons worship Jesus Christ and claim to be Christian. The LDS Church's website, lds.org, explains that while the term Christian often is used to describe specific beliefs and practices, "When Mormons say they are Christian, they are not suggesting that their beliefs line up perfectly with evangelicals or Catholics or other Christians. Using the term 'Christian' is not an attempt to gain acceptance into the mainstream — something that has little appeal or relevance to Latter-day Saints. ... What Mormons mean when they say they are Christian is that they follow Jesus Christ."
This isn't the first time Keller has taken aim at Beck and Mormonism. In September, as Keller promoted a "Christian Center" near the so-called Ground Zero Mosque site, he mentioned the "false prophet" Beck. AOLNews quoted Keller saying, "(Beck) is leading people into a lie from hell and their souls too." He then added that Gandhi, "despite being a 'nice person,' was in hell as well."
To appropriate a quote from another evangelical, Rob Bell, "Gandhi's in hell? He is? And someone knows this for sure?"
TalkingPointsMemo.com looked at Keller's press release and recalled "Keller once called Islam a '1,400-year-old lie' and 'a wonderful religion … for pedophiles.'"
He also called Islam "a religion of hate, violence and death."
Keller's current press release seems to be a retread of an older press release from July last year where Keller begs to be on Beck's TV program.
It may be too early to see what impact Keller's pleas may have on Beck's career.
At the end of today's press release, Keller says, "All I have ever asked is that Beck and members of his cult be honest and truthful about what they believe."
And he still wants to get on Beck's show.
