House votes on setting later school start date

Votes Monday as the House, on a 71-23 vote, passed a measure to require that the school year could no longer start before the fourth Monday in August, though lawmakers adopted numerous amendments to exempt dozens of counties.

Voting yes were 52 Republicans and 19 Democrats. Voting no were 11 Republicans, 11 Democrats and one independent.
