FORT WORTH — The Utah baseball team took advantage of errors to break a 5-5 tie in the 11th inning and down eighth-ranked TCU, 7-6, on Friday.

Shaun Cooper reached on an error to lead off the 11th inning. He scored when Austin Shackelford reached on a throwing error after a sacrifice bunt. A pair of deep fly ball outs from Cody Guymon and Trey Nielsen led to pinch-runner Tyson Gonzalez scoring, giving Utah a two-run lead, 7-5.

TCU threatened in the bottom of the 11th, with Jason Coats and Josh Elander combining for back-to-back one-out hits to score a run before reliever Tyler Wagner struck out the next two batters to give Utah the win.

Wagner pitched four innings, allowing one run on two hits, striking out four.

"It was a great college baseball game," Utah coach Bill Kinneberg said. "We happened to get some breaks at the end and got it done, and Wags shut the door at the end of the game. It was a great win for our guys and hopefully it gives us some confidence coming back tomorrow (3 p.m. MT)."

Utah (16-5) is a half game behind first-place TCU (15-3) in the Mountain West Conference standings.

SAN DIEGO STATE 2, BYU 1: At San Diego, the Cougars (25-24, 7-11) took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning.

"This was one of our tougher losses we have had all year; Taylor (Cole) pitched outstanding," said BYU coach Vance Law.

Cole gave up two hits through six innings and was tagged with his fifth loss of the season.

That BYU lead came in the eighth when Dane Nielsen singled with one out to left field, then advanced to third on Jaycob Brugman's double to deep right field on the first offering. Ryan Bernal then hit deep enough to left field for a sacrifice fly to score Nielsen for a 1-0 lead.

SUU SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER: At Cedar City, the Grizzlies used solid defensive play to claim the first game of the day by a score of 6-3 and the Thunderbirds (22-27, 10-13) rallied in a back-and-forth second game to pull out an 8-7 victory. The two teams will wrap the series today at 1 p.m.

UTAH VALLEY SWEEPS HOUSTON BAPTIST: At Orem, Utah Valley ran its win streak to seven with a doubleheader sweep, 14-5 and 7-2. Goose Kallunki and Billy Burgess both had six hits during the twinbill, with Kallunki homering and driving in four and Burgess going 4-for-4 in the first game. Alex Exon and Jason Zundel both added three RBIs for UVU in the opener.

SLCC EARNS REMATCH: At Carson City, Nev., the Bruins took an 11-3 loss to Western Nevada and bounced back to defeat Southern Idaho 8-3. With the win SLCC moves on for a rematch against Western Nevada in the Region 18 Championship game.

SUU KNOCKED OUT OF TOURNAMENT: At Macomb, Ill., the Thunderbirds were eliminated from the Summit League Tournament with a narrow 4-3 defeat to UMKC. SUU (25-34) lost 8-0 to North Dakota State earlier Friday.

SLCC 6, SOUTHERN NEVADA 4: At West Jordan, the top-seeded Bruins advanced to the Region 18 softball championship game. Salt Lake scored all six runs in the second inning and Ariel Zimmerman struck out eight.
