TEMPE, Ariz. — Arizona freshman Jaycob Brugman hit a shallow two-run single Tuesday to left field to help BYU upset No. 6 Arizona State, 6-4.

Brugman's single put BYU up 5-0 and proved to be the game-winning RBI. Fellow freshman pitcher Desmond Poulson picked up his first save of the year, preserving the first victory of the season for senior co-captain Blake Torgerson.

Torgerson went six and a third innings, scattering seven hits. Torgerson got the offensive support he needed.

Austin Hall's a two-run double down the leftfield line against the wall in the fourth gave BYU a 2-0 lead

A couple of ASU miscues and an infield single loaded the bases for the Cougars in the fifth inning with one out. Ryan Bernal then hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Andrew Law, putting BYU up 3-0.

Hall led off with a double in the sixth and later scored on a sac-fly by Wes Guenther to give BYU a 6-0 cushion.

"Our guys have been competing hard for the last two weeks, but we haven't had any success," said BYU coach Vance Law. "Torgey (Blake Torgerson) was just outstanding. He has that sharp slider he can get over almost any time.

"I am pleased with our execution and overall performance tonight, this is huge. Our approach at the plate was much more relaxed. This is my first win I've had as a coach against the Sun Devils."

BYU evened its record to 21-21, while ASU is now 32-11. The Cougars next host Seattle University in a three-game series starting Thursday night.
