Coalville — Outstanding high school students from northeastern Utah were recognized during the 31st annual Northeast Utah Sterling Scholar competition held on April 19 at North Summit High School.
A total of 137 top scholars competed in 14 categories for cash awards and scholarship opportunities. Altamont, Duchesne, Dugway, Grantsville, Morgan, North Summit, Park City, Rich, South Summit, Tabiona, Uintah, Union, Wasatch and Wendover high schools were each represented at the competition.
Winners and runners-up were honored for their excellence in scholarship, leadership, citizenship and community service. Sixteen colleges and universities throughout the state offered opportunities for scholarships.
Steven E. Carlsen, superintendent of North Summit School District, welcomed students, parents and other guests. Opening and closing remarks were offered by Joyce Orton, chairperson of the Northeast Utah Region Sterling Scholar Committee and Laurie Turnblom, vice chairperson of the Northeast Utah Region Sterling Scholar Committee, introduced KSL'sGreg Wrubell as master of ceremonies for the evening. Musical selections were performed by Sara Mason, Union High, Michael Midgley, Morgan High, and Maurissa Weight, Wasatch High.
The Northeast Utah program is one of several regional programs that cover outlying areas of Utah. These regional programs are patterned after, though not directly administered by, the Deseret News, KSL 5 Television Wasatch Front program, which started in 1962 to publicly recognize accomplishments of high school students.
Honorees were:
Music: Winner: Maurissa Jane Weight, Wasatch High, parents Gary and Kristi Weight. Runners-up: Sara Kathleen Mason, Union High, parents Mark and Kimberly Mason; and Michael Blake Midgley, Morgan High, parents Mike and Susan Midgley.
Mathematics: Winner: Meagan Huber, Uintah High, parents Allen and Judith Huber. Runners-up: Alexandria Birk, North Summit High, parents Gordon T. Birk and Lane and Nicole Wardrop and Josh Mines, Morgan High, parents Brian and Debra Mines.
Social Science: Winner: Morgan Ferrell, Morgan High, parents Robert and Lori Ferrell. Runners-up: Alexis Lee, Park City High, parents Richard and Tracy Lee; and Rebecca Peatross, Duchesne High, parents Chris Peatross and Shauna Peatross.
Science: Winner: Aubree Hansen, Wasatch High, parents Ross and Holly Hansen. Runners-up: Samuel Abplanalp, Morgan High, parents Steven and Chamen Abplanalp; and Emily Kueser, South Summit High, parents Owen and Stacy Kueser.
