In honor of Earth Day on Friday, KUED-Ch. 7 will celebrate with a week of special programs that educate and inspire awareness of our planet.

Programs will explore earth-conscious topics ranging from global warming and garbage dumps to kangaroos and preservationists.

KUED's annual PBS KIDS "Share the Earth" will also play all day Monday through Friday and feature episodes of favorite children's shows encouraging kids to care for and respect the environment.

The effects of Australia bushfires that incinerated more than a million acres of land will be portrayed in Sunday night's feature of "Nature: Survivors of the Firestorm" at 7 p.m. This feature will tell the story of veterinarians and volunteers as they nursed traumatized wildlife back to health.

Nearly a century after his death, John Muir is remembered as the father of the environmental movement and the founder of the Sierra Club. His belief that it is every citizen's responsibility to protect our natural surroundings will be explored in "American Masters: John Muir" on Monday at 9 p.m.

On Tuesday night at 11 p.m., Independent Lens' "Waste Land" will follow renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeyed from Brooklyn to his home country of Brazil. There, Muniz photographs an eclectic band of catadores— pickers of recyclable materials — at the world's largest garbage dump and works with them to "paint" their portraits using garbage.

With more than $30 billion earmarked for "green energy," President Barack Obama's stimulus package marks the first serious step by a U.S. administration to tackle the threat of global warming. In light of the economic recession, however, the public has begun to worry less about the planet. "NOVA: Power Surge" on Wednesday at 8 p.m. will explore the possibility of emerging technologies to defeat global warming.
