Obituary: JOHNSON, VERDA

Verda B. Johnson 12/20/1927 ~ 2/10/2011

Our beloved mother and grandmother passed away peacefully after a long illness on Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011. She was born in Helper, Utah to Layton Ratcliffe Barrus and Isabell Bollschweiler Barrus, both of whom she honored and cherished. She graduated from Granite High School and later from the University of Utah, with a major in Dietetics and a minor in Chemistry. After a year's internship at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Los Angeles, she became a registered dietician and worked for a time at Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. She married Dale Williams Johnson in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on August 14, 1951. They enjoyed 33 1/2 years together before his untimely death in 1985. She lived an exemplary life of gentleness, kindness, sweetness and patience. She loved the gospel of Jesus Christ and her family more than words can express. Verda was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers, Layton Charley Barrus, Donald Martin Barrus, and Robert Dale Barrus; and her son-in-law, Jeffrey R. Mumford. She is survived by her brother, Herbert Glen Barrus; children, Martha Ann Westover (Paul), Mary Jane Healy (Jon), Betty Jean Mumford, Mark Dale Johnson (Sheila), and Karen Joy Whitt (Stephen); 22 grandchildren; and 22 great-grand-children. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the South Cottonwood Ward located at 5605 South Vine Street, Murray, Utah. Friends and family may call Friday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 So.
