Here are some books that have crossed our desks recently.

HARDBACK

"EVER BY MY SIDE: A Memoir in Eight Pets," by Dr. Nick Trout, Broadway, 320 pages, $24 (nf)

Veterinarian Nick Trout's account of his life is through eight pets that have touched his life — he includes humorous, nostalgic and intimate stories of the animals. From his 20 years as a veterinarian, Trout tells stories about both dogs and cats that have been by his family's side during the unexpected events of life.

"I NEVER KNEW THAT ABOUT THE IRISH," by Christopher Winn (nf): Examines Ireland's 32 counties and shares facts about historical figures and cultural events.

"AMERICAN INDIAN NATIONS FROM TERMINATION TO RESTORATION, 1953-2006," by Roberta Ulrich (nf): The retired newspaper reporter delves into the complicated relationship between Indian tribes and the federal government as the tribes seek to retain their heritage.

"FORTUNATE SONS," by Leil Leibovitz (nf): In an attempt to modernize China, 120 boys were sent to New England in 1872 to be groomed as cultural ambassadors. When the program was cancelled, the boys returned to a country that felt unfamiliar.

"LITTLE PRINCES," by Connor Grennan (nf): Initially as a volunteer at the Little Princes Children's Home, an orphanage, Connor Grennan learns that the children have families and are being hoodwinked by child traffickers. Grennan does what he can to help reunite them with their families.

"15 MINUTES: General Curtis LeMay and the Countdown to Nuclear Annihilation," by L. Douglas Keeney (nf): Looks at the efforts the U.S. took to thwart any surprise attacks by the Russians during the Cold War.

"HOUSE OF PRAYER No. 2," by Mark Richard (nf): This memoir tells Mark Richard's story of growing up with a physical disability in the American South and defying limitations.

"AND FURTHERMORE," by Judi Dench (nf): The Academy Award-winning actress writes about both her onstage career and her private life.

PAPERBACK

"JUNO'S DAUGHTERS," by Lisa Saffran (f): A mother and her two teenage daughters learn the consequences of love during a Shakespeare production.
