SYRACUSE — Brittney Martin was sifting through all the letters she received during her sophomore year at Syracuse High and started to feel some buyer's remorse.

She was flattered and overwhelmed when she decided to offer a verbal commitment to play basketball at the University of Utah. But about a week ago, she had second thoughts and officially "uncommitted" so she can explore all her options.

"I still love the U," she said, "but I want to see what else is out there. I feel like I made my decision too early."

She said part of committing early was thinking she wanted to stay close to home. Now with Cal, Baylor and similar schools inquiring about her, she isn't so sure she wants to go to college in Utah.

"My parents thought I committed too soon, but they also wanted me to stay close to home," she said with a grin.

Martin was the 5A MVP for her role in helping the Titans win the championship last year with a perfect 25-0 season. This year, the top-ranked 5A team remains unbeaten and Martin is one of the state's leading scorers, averaging nearly 19 points per game. She also averages double-digit rebounds and is a ferocious defender.

She said Utah is still on her list, and she remains a fan of the program.

"Some of the schools I've heard from I didn't know anything about," she said. "It's kind of exciting."

Martin has extra motivation to make it to the 5A title game, as Baylor's coaches have told her they will attend if Syracuse is playing.

"That would be cool," she said.

As for playing in front of the sport's top college coaches in the biggest game of the season, she just shrugs.

"I like pressure," she said. "It pumps me up."
