Real Salt Lake announces 2011 schedule

SANDY — After a slight delay, Major League Soccer unveiled the complete 2011 MLS regular season schedule today. The league announced home openers for all 18 teams back in December, but Real Salt Lake now knows the dates for its other 32 regular season games.

RSL opens the season on March 19 at San Jose, and returns home a week later to host the L.A. Galaxy at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Weeks before the MLS slate gets underway, however, RSL has very meaningful games on Feb. 22 and March 1 in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals. The first leg is in Columbus in Feb. 22, and the return leg is in Utah on March 1.

RSL is unbeaten in 25 straight regular season home games, which is a great sign entering the 2011 season with five of its first seven league games at Rio Tinto Stadium.

The schedule gets much tougher down the stretch with Real Salt Lake playing nine of its final 13 games on the road, including four straight from Aug. 13 to Sept. 10.

With expansion clubs Portland and Vancouver joining the league this season, MLS has expanded the schedule from 30 to 34 games to accommodate a home-and-away schedule against the league's other 17 teams.

Fifteen of RSL's 17 home games or either on weekends or holidays. Its only two midweek home games are Wed., April 13 against defending MLS Cup champions Colorado and Wednesday, Sept. 28 against Chicago.

Real Salt Lake finished the 2010 season three points shy of winning the MLS Supporter's Shield for the best regular in the regular season. With 23 players back from last year's roster, and five of its first seven league games at home, a slow start is very unlikely in 2011.

Here's a complete look at RSL's 2011 schedule, complete with CCL dates and U.S. Open Cup dates.
