DENVER — It took Deron Williams five seasons to get into the All-Star Game for the first time.
It didn't take nearly that long for him to get back.
For the second year in a row, the Utah Jazz point guard has been named an All-Star reserve after being voted in by the coaches.
"It is a great honor and a great accomplishment to be named to the All-Star team, especially getting selected by the Western Conference coaches," Williams said in a statement released by the Jazz. "There are so many great players in this league right now; that's why I feel so honored the coaches picked me to be there."
Other Western Conference reserves selected include Tim Duncan, Pau Gasol, Manu Ginobili, rookie phenom Blake Griffin, Dirk Nowitzki and Russell Westbrook.
The West starters, voted in by fans, include Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant and Yao Ming. Because of Yao's injury, NBA commissioner David Stern will pick a 13th All-Star.
Eleven players in Jazz history have earned All-Star recognition, and Williams became only the sixth player from the franchise to make it multiple times.
"I take a lot of pride in it, especially after the guys I'm following," he said. "I'm following John (Stockton) and Karl (Malone), perennial All-Stars, and also Booz (Carlos Boozer) who had a couple of them here. I'm just trying to keep the streak alive and keep people focusing on Utah."
Williams is having a career year scoring-wise, averaging 21.9 points to go with his 9.1 assists per game. He is the only player in the NBA to average 20-plus points and nine-plus assists.
Williams, who has had 21 double-doubles this season, is currently sidelined with a right wrist injury that has kept him out of the past four games.
Considered day-to-day, his status for tonight's road game against the Denver Nuggets is uncertain.
Hall of Famer and TNT analyst Charles Barkley noted that this should be the third All-Star showing in a row for Williams, who earned 2010 second-team All-NBA honors.
The 2008 gold-medal Olympian was named the NBA's Western Conference player of the month for October and November.
Stern has a variety of stellar point guards out West to select from should he opt to pick a playmaker for the open All-Star spot. Williams was chosen ahead of standouts such as Tony Parker, Steve Nash and Chauncey Billups, among others.
"I think every year it's hard for point guards to make it, because there are so many great point guards in this league, especially in the West," Williams said. "There are always young guys that are coming into the league, and it's going to continue to be a fight every year. That's another reason I feel so honored."
Eastern Conference All-Star reserves include Rajon Rondo, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, Al Horford, Paul Pierce, Joe Johnson and Chris Bosh. The previously announced starters are Derrick Rose, Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, Amare Stoudemire and Dwight Howard.
The 60th NBA All-Star Game will take place in Los Angeles at Staples Center on Sunday, Feb. 20. It will be televised live on TNT and broadcast on ESPN Radio.
