CEDAR CITY (AP) — The city got an experienced new councilman, after a tie decided by the mayor.

Cedar City Mayor Joe Burgess said John Westwood's two prior terms on the council, ending in 2007, were the deciding factor in his tie-breaking choice over Holly Porter.

The Spectrum of St. George reports that Westwood was sworn in Wednesday to replace Dale Brinkerhoff.

Brinkerhoff gave up his council seat to be sworn in last week to the Iron County Commission.

Westwood was among 14 people vying for the council seat.

He says he intends to serve a one-year term.

The seat will be on the municipal ballot later this year.
