Top 25 basketball roundup: Jared Sullinger, Buckeyes handle big test

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Freshman Jared Sullinger had 30 points and a career-high 19 rebounds to lead No. 2 Ohio State past South Carolina 79-57 on Saturday.

William Buford added 12 points and Jon Diebler had 11 for the Buckeyes (10-0), who expected one of their biggest tests of the young season but dominated throughout.

Sam Muldrow scored 14 points and Malik Cooke had 13 for South Carolina (7-2), whose only losses this season have come against second-ranked Big Ten teams. The Gamecocks lost 82-73 at then-No. 2 Michigan State on Nov. 16.

Sullinger's previous best in rebounds was 14 against North Carolina A&T last month.

His 14 defensive rebounds were an Ohio State freshman record.

NO. 3 KANSAS 70, USC 68: At Lawrence, Kan., Josh Selby made his long-awaited collegiate debut one to remember with a go-ahead 3-pointer with 26 seconds left to lead Kansas. Selby, a freshman point guard ordered by the NCAA to sit out the first nine games, had 21 points, including five 3-pointers, and kept the crowd on its feet throughout the game.

NO. 5 SYRACUSE 83, IONA 77: At Syracuse, N.Y., Kris Joseph scored 21 points to help No. 5 Syracuse extend its perfect start to 11 games.

FLORIDA 57, NO. 6 KANSAS ST. 44: At Sunrise, Fla., Kenny Boynton scored 15 points to shake a slump and Florida held Kansas State to 27 percent shooting in the Orange Bowl Classic. The Wildcats missed 19 of 20 shots during one stretch, and their point total was their lowest in Frank Martin's five seasons as coach. Florida fell behind 20-8, then outscored Kansas State 42-13 to take control. Boynton was 6 for 12 from the field and was voted the game's most valuable player.

NO. 8 PITTSBURGH 97, MARYLAND-EASTERN SHORE 64: At Pittsburgh, Gilbert Brown missed only two shots while scoring a career-high 28 points.

GONZAGA 68, NO. 9 BAYLOR 64: At Dallas, Kelly Olynyk put Gonzaga ahead to stay with a 3-pointer right after Baylor scored four points on one possession and the Bulldogs handed the Bears their first loss. Olynyk's made his go-ahead basket with 1:46 left, and Gonzaga (6-5) made 7 of 9 free throws after that. Four of the Bulldogs' losses were to Top 25 teams. Baylor (7-1), with its highest ranking ever, played away from home for the first time, but only about 100 miles from campus at the American Airlines Center in Dallas.

NO. 10 VILLANOVA 78, DELAWARE 59: At Philadelphia, Corey Fisher scored 21 points and Maalik Wayns had 14 to lead No. 10 Villanova to its fourth straight win, 78-59 over Delaware on Saturday night.
