SALT LAKE CITY — Utah freshman safety Brian Blechen has been named to the Sporting News All-Freshman Team, the publication announced Wednesday.
It is the fourth Freshman All-America citation for Blechen, who was a second-team pick by Rivals.com and Phil Steele, and honorable mention by CollegeFootballNews.com. Blechen's latest honor brings Utah's All-America total to 14. Punt returner Shaky Smithson has been named to six All-America teams, while offensive lineman Caleb Schlauderaff and Blechen have made four apiece.
Blechen, an honorable mention all-conference pick, finished second in the MWC in interceptions with four and was a three-time MWC Defensive Player of the Week. He made game-saving interceptions vs. Pitt in overtime and San Diego State. He is tied for third on the team in tackles with 61.

Hate to say it as a Cougar fan, but this kid is for real. He is going to make Utah's defense a lot better than they would be without him. He'll be tough to fight against over the next few years.
The intensity of this guy on the field is amazing. I hope to see him keep giving those hits over the next few years. Reminds more of Robert Johnson than Erik Weddle although there is a definite size difference between the two.
Keep it up!
This kid is special!
Looking forward to watching him progress under one of the best coaching staffs out there.
Another Eric Weddle in the making? He has many of the same skills that Eric had as a college player and is More..
