SALT LAKE CITY — A West Haven man who was in critical condition after crashing his airplane in Roy on Sunday, made a slight improvement Tuesday.

Clayton Roop, 46 — who suffered second- and third-degree burns in the crash — has been upgraded to serious condition, according to University of Utah Health Care and Health Sciences spokeswoman Kathy Wilets.

Roop was attempting to land his Cessna 210 airplane at Ogden-Hinckley Airport when his engine apparently began to struggle, leading him to clip a powerline and crash near 2000 West and 4300 South. Two homes at 2080 West and 2089 West on 4300 South suffered damage from the crash and subsequently caught fire.

According to those who helped him at the scene, Roop said he was returning from a trip to Lake Powell. He was transported first to Ogden Regional Medical Center before being transferred to the University of Utah Burn Trauma Unit, after sustaining burns on 15 percent of his body.

Though 17 people were in the two respective homes at the time of the crash, no one else was injured.

In a statement issued by the hospital, Roop's family members said they were grateful no one else was injured in the accident.
