Israel: Negligence

EIN HOD — Negligence, not arson, appears to have caused the worst forest fire in Israel's history, police said Saturday as firefighters from around the world worked to quell the deadly blaze for a third consecutive day.

Authorities have arrested two male minors in connection with the fire, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said. He refused to provide further details, but said: "We're talking negligence at the moment."

Easter Island: Riots

BUENOS AIRES — A military plane carrying riot police reinforcements landed on Easter Island Saturday, and Chile's Interior Minister said they will continue evicting Rapa Nui islanders who have been squatting in government buildings built on their ancestral properties.

With decades-long disputes over property ownership seemingly going nowhere, some Rapa Nui have taken matters into their own hands, seizing properties they said were illegally taken from their families generations ago.

Ecuador: Volcano

QUITO — The Tungurahua volcano in Ecuador is billowing ash into the sky and sending super-hot pyroclastic flows surging down its slopes, causing authorities to evacuate nearby villages.

Hugo Yepez, director of Ecuador's Geophysical Institute, says no one has been injured nor any village damaged. He says people within 8 miles of the volanco's center were evacuated Saturday as a precaution.

Britain: Fugitive

LONDON — A former tycoon who faces trial next year for allegedly stealing millions from his collapsed company, was arrested Saturday for allegedly breaching his bail conditions but was released hours later.

Asil Nadir said police had apologized.

Nadir, who once headed the Polly Peck business empire, is awaiting trial on charges of theft running into several million dollars.
