CLEARFIELD — Police officials in Davis County found and arrested a woman Friday who they believe robbed Maverik convenience stores in both Layton and Clearfield.

A woman entered the Maverik convenience store at 1510 E. 700 South just before 4:30 a.m. Thursday and initially just walked around the store, Assistant Clearfield Police Chief Mike Stenquist said. She then took out a handgun and told the store clerk to open the cash register.

"The clerk opened the till and gave an undisclosed amount of money to the suspect, who then fled east on foot to an awaiting vehicle," Stenquist said.

He said the clerk didn't get a description of the vehicle. Stenquist said police detectives used surveillance video and witness descriptions to confirm it is the same woman suspected of robbing another Maverik store in Layton earlier that same morning.

In that instance, a woman entered the Maverik convenience store at 2014 N. Hillfield in Layton around 3 a.m. and demanded money, Layton Police Lt. Garrett Atkin said. He said the clerk could see a gun in the woman's pocket and turned over money immediately.

On Friday, Stenquist reported that 35-year-old Krista Sue Crossen of Ogden was arrested Friday morning at the Ogden River Inn by detectives from both agencies. He said the woman confessed to the robberies, saying she needed money for "food, lodging and 'to get high.' "

She later told detectives the gun used in the robberies was a toy gun that she has since thrown away.

Crossen was booked into the Davis County Jail for investigation of aggravated robbery.

Police detectives are continuing to investigate whether anyone else was involved in the robberies
