WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: At Redding, Calif., the 10th-ranked Griffins outscored Simpson 47-23 in the first half of Saturday's game and used the cushion to carry them to a 78-61 win. Westminster (9-1) shot 51.9% in that opening half while making six triples. They have now won eight straight games and three straight away from home.
The Griffins finished the game shooting 46.9% from the floor. They overcame 24 turnovers by holding Simpson (1-4) to 37.3% shooting and grabbing 12 offensive rebounds. Westminster recorded 15 assists on 23 made field goals and also came up with 12 steals. Jenteal Jackson led the Griffins in scoring with 16 points and posted two assists on back-to-back threes from Dana Bates and Rebecca Beaudoin to end the first half. Jackson shot 5 of 6 from the floor and made all three of her attempts from beyond the arc. She also grabbed six rebounds and had five steals.
Allie Eastman finished as the only other Griffin in double figures with 13 points. Dani Evans added eight points while Bates and Olivia Pierce-Eiselein had seven points apiece.
Tiffany Johnson led Simpson with 17 points and grabbed six boards including five offensive. Nicole Jones added 13 points and a team-best eight boards.
Westminster will now head to Caldwell, Idaho, for the Lady Yote Classic over Thanksgiving Weekend. The Griffins will face Whitworth on Friday and George Fox on Saturday.
MEN'S BASKETBALL: At Caldwell, Idaho, the 12th-ranked Griffins had three players score double figures as they defeated the College of Idaho 74-65 at the Golden Rule Shootout on Saturday night. Westminster (6-0) won title for the fourth consecutive year and seventh time in history.
The Griffins never trailed in the game and led by as much as 13 midway through the second half. They shot 46.7% from the field and went 6 of 11 (54.5%) from beyond the arc. Westminster also shot 83.9% from the charity stripe in 31 free throw attempts. They outrebounded the host Yotes (2-5) 27-17 and turned nine offensive rebounds into eight points.
Jake Orchard and Michael Stockton finished with 18 points apiece.
Orchard was a perfect 4 of 4 from beyond the arc and grabbed a team-best seven rebounds. Stockton was deadly at the foul line where he went 10 of 12. Nick Hovda added 12 points off the bench.
Kelly McCarty had 14 points off the bench to lead four College of Idaho scorers in double figures. Miguel Rodriguez added 12 points and five assists while Matt Ballenger had 10 points and six assists. Steve Peres added 11 points. The C of I had just 10 turnovers.
Westminster will now return home to host the Westminster Thanksgiving Classic. They will face Warner Pacific on Friday and Colorado Christian on Saturday. Both games will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Behnken Field House.
