VOLLEYBALL: The University of Utah volleyball team has announced the signing of five student-athletes who will join the team for the 2011 season, head coach Beth Launiere announced. Bailey Bateman, Shelby Dalton, Becca Fuchs, Chelsey Schofield and Alli Spurrier will join the Utes in 2011.
Bailey Bateman (MB / 6-0 / West Hooper, Utah / Fremont HS)
Nominated for both the Gatorade Player of the Year and Under Armour High School Player of the Year awards during her junior year ... named to PrepVolleyball.com's Top 100, one of two from the state of Utah ... all-area selection in 2009 ... plays for Club V 18 Black for coach Reed Carlson.
Shelby Dalton (OH-MB / 6-1 / Moab, Utah / Grand County HS)
All-state selection as a junior and sophomore (2010 team has not been announced yet) ... named the Region 15 MVP during her junior season ... was a pitcher and shortstop for 2010 state champion softball team ... also was a center on the basketball team.
Becca Fuchs (OH / 5-11 / Menomonee Falls, Wis. / Menomonee Falls HS)
Led team to semifinals of WIAA state tournament in 2010 ... third-team all-state selection in 2010 ... second-team all-conference selection in 2008 and 2009 ... plays club for Milwaukee Sting 17 Gold and was selected to the Prep Volleyball Showcase All-Tournament Team in 2010.
Chelsey Schofield (OH / 6-1 / Provo, Utah / Mountain View HS)
Named to PrepVolleyball.com's Top 100 team, one of two from the state of Utah ... was an AVCA/MaxPreps Player of the Week ... MVP of Region 7 in 2009 .... first-team all-state and all-region selection in 2009 (2010 team has not been released yet).
Alli Spurrier (RS / 6-3 / Salt Lake City, Utah / Olympus HS)
Selected to 2010 4A State Tournament team ... served as team captain ... three-time team MVP ... all-state team in 2009 ... averaged 18 kills, five blocks and two service aces during career at Olympus High School for coach Sam Vaitai ... pounded 487 kills during her senior season.
BASEBALL: Utah head baseball coach Bill Kinneberg announced the signing of five student-athletes to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period. Kody Davis (2B, Juan Diego HS, Salt Lake City), Parker Morin (C, College of Southern Idaho, Park City, Utah), Keenyn Walker (CF, Central Arizona CC, Salt Lake City), Tony Vocca (RHP/DH, Yavapai CC, Cottonwood, Ariz.) and Jackson Goulder (RHP/OF, Central Arizona CC, Cave Creek, Ariz.) will join Utah for the 2012 baseball season.
Davis, Morin and Walker all have Utah roots. Davis is entering his senior season at Juan Diego and was the 3A MVP in 2010. Walker was a three-time all-state selection at Judge who has been drafted twice. He also earned numerous honors for his football accomplishments. Morin was a three-year all-state player at Park City. He was an honorable mention all-region pick at the College of Southern Idaho last year. Vocca was the Arizona 4A Player of the Year as a high school senior and both pitches and hits for Yavapai CC. Goulder is also a two-way player and earned region player of the year honors in high school.
"We are very excited about this signing class," Kinneberg said. "They are all very athletic and fit our immediate needs.
"It's great to have Keenyn and Parker come home after two years of junior college. We want to try to get the best players out of Utah to come here and start the Pac-12 with us. That was a great start to our recruiting process this year."
