BYU led 7-0 early in the first quarter when it faced a third-and-1 on its own 20-yard line. Running back Bryan Kariya rumbled into the line and broke several tackles for an 18-yard gain. One play later, the Cougars scored on a flea-flicker from Jake Heaps to Ashworth to take a 7-0 lead.
