WRESTLING: The Utah Valley wrestling team will hit the road this weekend and travel to Laramie, Wyo., to take part in the Cowboy Open Saturday.
The event is presented by UniWyo Federal Credit Union and will run all day in War Memorial Fieldhouse on the University of Wyoming's campus. Cowboy Open results can be followed on TrackWrestling.com and action will span over 10 mats, beginning at 9 a.m. MT.
At the open the Wolverines will take on opponents from many different schools all around the West. Wrestlers from conference rivals host Wyoming, Air Force and Northern Colorado are all scheduled to be there.
UVU had a very successful opening tournament last weekend at Northwest College's Trapper Open as 12 different Wolverines placed in the top four. Senior 133-pounder Flint Ray and sophomore 125-pounder Paul Johnson both reigned supreme at the open as they each managed to win their respective weight classes.
Following Saturday's action, UVU will then compete at the Kaufman-Brand Open in Omaha, Neb., on Nov. 20.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: The Utah Valley women's basketball team opens its 2010-11 campaign by taking part in the Preseason WNIT. UVU will open the preseason tournament by playing at South Dakota State Friday at 6 p.m. MT. From there the Wolverines next two contests will be to be determined on the outcomes of the Preseason WNIT.
UVU capped off its 2009-10 season by winning the inaugural Great West Conference Tournament Championship after going 10-22 and placing sixth in conference in the regular season with a 3-9 record. On route to the conference title, the Wolverines won their final five games of the season, which included defeating the top three teams in the GWC in North Dakota, Texas-Pan American and Chicago State.
The South Dakota State Jackrabbits have made the NCAA Tournament the past two seasons and finished a year ago with a 22-11 overall record and a 14-4 clip in the Summit League. The 14-4 conference record was good enough for second place but the Jacks didn't stop there as they went on the win their conference postseason tournament title.
SDSU returns three starters and nine letterwinners from a year ago. The Jacks top returning scorer is senior guard Kristin Rotert who averaged 12.6 points per game and was an All-Summit League Honorable Mention in 2009-10.
