SALT LAKE CITY — All of the seeded players, including Salt Lake's Rod Horton, advanced Monday at the U.S. Men's 45s Indoor Championships at the Salt Lake Swimming & Tennis Club.
Horton, the head professional at the SLSTC, who is the No. 8 seed, defeated Scott Chandler 6-2, 6-3. Other winners included No. 2 seed Mario Tabares over Alfred Grossniklaus 6-2, 6-1, No. 3 Andy Stoner over George Lukes 6-1, 6-1 and No. 4 Thomas Kong over Karl Ward, 6-3, 6-2.
Also, Kelly Ward (No. 5) defeated Tom Baker 6-1, 6-0, Willie Alumbaugh (No. 6) beat Bobby Roper 6-0, 6-2, and Gilbert Schuerholz (No. 7) advanced after Leo Young retired, 3-6, 3-1.
No. 1 seed Rick Leach, who has won in doubles at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and Australian Open, plays his first match today at 11 a.m. against unseeded Mike Lamb.
