WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: The team will play its final exhibition contest Wednesday at 4:30 p.m., when it hosts Fort Lewis College. The game will be played in the UCCU Center, and admission is free.
Two newcomers had huge nights for UVU in its first exhibition contest last Saturday against Dixie State, as sophomore-transfer Sammie Jensen put up a game-high 18 points and 21 rebounds and freshman Kim Bell chipped in 17 points and eight boards.
"I saw some great things out of our new kids," Coach Cathy Nixon said. "Sammie Jensen with 21 rebounds and 18 points, Kim Bell, Whitney Jenkins and Kali Roche all managed themselves really well. Defensively we have a ways to go but overall I saw some good things."
UVU capped off its 2009-10 season by winning the inaugural Great West Conference Tournament Championship. The Wolverines finished with a 10-22 overall record and a 3-9 record in the Great West. UVU also won its final five games last season.
Utah Valley welcomes back eight letterwinners and two starters from last year's GWC tournament winning team. UVU also welcomes in five newcomers this year that will look to make an immediate impact and help solidify the roster.
The Skyhawks are a NCAA Div. II member who play in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC). Fort Lewis is located in Durango, Colo., and has an enrollment of 3,762 students.
Fort Lewis, which advanced to the 2010 NCAA Division II championship game, was picked second in the 2010-11 RMAC preseason poll. The Skyhawks, who set school and league records for its 35-4 record (18-1 in the RMAC) last year, were edged out in voting by Adams State. Both schools received six first-place votes, but the Grizzlies had 25 total points to 29 by the Skyhawks.
Last month, the Skyhawks were ranked No. 18 in the Women's Division II Bulletin preseason Top 25.
