SALT LAKE CITY — The ups and downs of the Highland football team have proved a couple of things this season — the Rams are capable of beating anyone, but it is also possible for them to come out flat and lose.
"We have had some moments where we played some really great football, but we've also had some complacency," said Highland coach Brody Benson. "No matter how hard you try to get up for every game, you don't always get it. It is tough for these kids to raise their emotions and intensity every week. But that shouldn't be the case from here on out."
With the Rams (6-4, No. 2-seed in Region 6) hosting Box Elder (6-4, No. 2 seed in Region 5) for the first round of the 4A playoffs, it shouldn't be difficult for the players to find the necessary motivation.
"Last week, we played like a team that was fighting for one more week," said Benson of his team's 42-14 victory over East. "That type of effort is what we are going to need from here on out. We need to play with some attitude."
As Benson describe the type of game Highland would need to play, two words continually came up: tough and physical. He believes that for his team to achieve playoff success, that brand of football will be the key.
"I do believe the trademark of Highland football has been our ability to play tough and physical," he added. "We want to get after a team and let them know that they are in for a long fight. We have guys that want to dominate you, hit you and let them know you are there."
One Ram player Box Elder will certainly know is present is quarterback Anthony Smithson. The younger brother of Ute receiver and return specialist Shaky Smithson, Anthony has shown some of the same "shake and bake" moves in leading the offense. Toi Taufa has rushed for over 500 yards and four touchdowns this season, while and Sione Houma has come on strong. Nate Fakahafua has over 750 yards receiving and nine touchdown grabs.
