MEN'S GOLF: Utah State's Tyson McFarland shot a final-round 73 to finish tied for sixth place with a one-under 143 at the Cal State Northridge hosted Bill Cullum Invitational held at the Wood Ranch Golf Course in Simi Valley, Calif.
Utah State shot an eight-over 296 Tuesday to finish tied for eighth out of 15 teams with a 29-over 893 after beginning the tournament with a 21-over 309, followed by an even-par 288. UC Riverside won the team championship with a seven-over 871 (298-286-287) and Cal State Northridge's Nick Delio shot a final round 67 to take medalist honors with an eight-under 208 (72-69-67).
McFarland, a senior from Rexburg, Idaho, began the tournament with a one-over 73 and then carded a three-under 69 during his second 18 holes.
Sophomore Brendan Dennis (Roosevelt, Utah) finished tied for 22nd for Utah State with a five-over 221 (74-72-75), while junior Chanse Godderidge (Smithfield, Utah) tied for 30th with a seven-over 223 (79-71-73). Senior Benjamin Schilleman (Layton, Utah) tied for 71st with a 21-over 237 (84-78-75), and junior Austin French (Idaho Falls, Idaho) was 82nd with a 26-over 242 (83-76-83).
Senior Thad Truman (Blackfoot, Idaho) also competed for Utah State as an individual and tied for 88th with a 29-over 245 (80-82-83).
The Bill Cullum Invitational concludes Utah State's fall schedule.
CROSS COUNTRY: Utah State's men's cross country team was picked to win its sixth straight Western Athletic Conference championship, while the Aggie women were tabbed third as the WAC announced its men's and women's cross country pre-championship coaches' polls on Tuesday, as voted on by the league's nine head coaches. The poll is released in advance of the 2010 WAC Cross Country Championships scheduled Saturday at Moscow, Idaho, hosted by the University of Idaho.
Utah State, the winner of the past five men's WAC championships, received six first-place votes and 36 points. Boise State captured second place with 31 points with one first-place vote. Fresno State claimed the third spot with 23 points, one point ahead of Idaho in fourth. New Mexico State (20) and San Jose State (10) followed closely behind in fifth and sixth place, respectively. Louisiana Tech received seven points to finish seventh.
