MURRAY — The Humane Society of Utah will be expanding its facilities, 4242 S. 300 West, Murray, to accommodate the growing feline population in northern Utah.

"We have a large variety of cats right now and we're encouraging the public to adopt a cat and enjoy the many benefits of owning a cat," to Gene Baierschmidt, executive director of the Humane Society, said.

Construction on the shelter's parking lot is now underway. When the work is complete, which is expected within the week, the new and improved lot will have approximately 40 more parking spaces and an improved traffic ?ow pattern designed to provide a safer environment for the animals.

The Humane Society is also planning to create a new cat habitat, which could resemble facilities at similar shelters in communities such as San Diego.

This new habitat will not only provide more pleasant surroundings for the cats and the public, it will also provide more room to house more cats and kittens.

Construction of the new cat habitat is targeted for completion in the spring of 2011.

During the construction, the Humane Society will maintain its regular hours and services.
