Week 10 again kicks off the 2A postseason and decides region championships, playoff pairings, and, for many teams, the end of the season. With a bye this week, Carbon has already finished its year. Snow Canyon and Timpanogos, which also have byes, must rely on Dixie and Mountain View, respectively, to win for their seasons to be extended.
Outright region champions will be decided in two head-to-head matchups: Wasatch at Park City (Region 10) and Monticello at Milford (1A-South).
Meanwhile, there's only one elimination game: Monument Valley at Whitehorse. Seven teams must win to have any hope of postseason play: Cyprus, West Jordan, American Fork, Sky View, Grantville, North Sanpete and Layton Christian.
Five teams have claimed outright region titles: Fremont (Region 1), Cottonwood (2), Lone Peak (4), San Juan (2A-East) and Millard (2A-West).
Another seven have clinched at least a share of a region championship: Bingham (Region 3), Timpview (7), Springville (8), Hurricane (9), Juan Diego (11), Delta (12) and Duchesne (1A-North). All seven are favored to win and grab outright titles. That leaves just Regions 5 and 6 with the likelihood of co-champions this season.
Outside of 2A, a pair of first-round games are set no matter what happens this week: Northridge at Alta in 5A and Desert Hills at Bear River in 3A.
Remarkable Milestone
Before looking at the playoffs, a special achievement needs noting. This Thursday, Roger DuPaix will coach his 400th game. He's directed more games than 56 schools – and 34 current ones – including Alta, Timpview, Mountain Crest, Northridge and Pine View, have even played.
His all-time record is 292-107 in nine seasons at Highland (55-38 from 1977-85) and 25 at Skyline (237-69 from 1986-2010).
Thom Budge (Bonneville, 1975-2005) is second in total games coached with 341 and Larry Wall (Bountiful, 1985-2010) is second among active coaches with 291.
DuPaix's 292 wins tops the all-time chart for coaching victories. Budge is second among all coaches with 237 and Wall is second among active coaches with 198.
