DRAPER — Facing Brighton's defense leaves opposing teams feeling like they have run into a concrete wall.

No offense can seem to cage the Bengals. No attack — however cleverly designed — has had success in breaking through and putting up goals against Brighton over the past month.

Davis found this reality out the hard way. The explosive Darts never found their target in 80 minutes, and the Bengals claimed a 3-0 semifinal victory in the 5A girls soccer tournament Tuesday afternoon.

With the victory, Brighton is in the 5A championship game for the second time in three seasons. Now, the goal for the Bengals is to complete the final step that eluded them once before.

"I've been here for four years, and we've been way close every year," senior forward Stephanie Verdoia said. "We made it my sophomore year, but we didn't finish it off. I just hope we can get there and finish it off this time."

Finishing off Davis was not a problem.

The Bengals (16-0-3) put the Darts in a hole early, when Verdoia scored in the third minute. She looped the ball over goalkeeper Dani MacKay from 30 yards out and buried it in the right corner of the net to make it 1-0.

It got worse for the Darts (17-2) as Verdoia completed her hat trick in the second half. She scored in the 59th minute after getting loose on a breakaway and splitting two defenders. Verdoia fired it at the left post while streaking toward the right one and hit the corner for a 2-0 lead.

She made it 3-0 in the 74th minute when senior midfielder Amanda Jensen sent a ball ahead to Verdoia on a counterattack. Verdoia deftly curled the ball inside the right post at the end of her run. MacKay initially got a glove on it, but the ball slipped through her fingertips and landed in the back of the net.

Verdoia's hat trick ran her season tally to 27 goals. She needs just one more goal to tie Alta forward Rylei North as the 5A scoring leader.

"She's amazing," Brighton coach Tenille Vance said. "You can't ask for anything more than that. Coming into that big of a game and getting a hat trick is unbelievable."

It helps Verdoia to have a backline that refuses to let anything get past. And she is quick to credit her defense for making her look good.
