CROSS COUNTRY: Weber State's Brett Hales won the men's open race at the Pre-National meet, Saturday in Terre Haute, Indiana. The open race was an individual race with no team scoring. Hales, a junior from Ogden, Utah, covered the 8K race in a time of 24:23.5.
"Brett ran a great race," said WSU head coach Paul Pilkington. "He went out and led the entire race and kept pressure on the rest of the field. I was really pleased with his effort."
The Wildcat women were part of the 39-team field in the Blue Race which featured several nationally ranked teams. The 'Cats finished 21st with 531 points. Sarah Callister, a sophomore from Ogden, Utah was WSU's top individual covering the 6K course in 21:21.9, finishing in 57th place individually.
"We ran well, but it wasn't our best effort of the year," said Pilkington. "Our first four runners were within 24 seconds of each other, but then we had a minute gap to our fifth runner. Sarah ran a decent race despite not feeling 100 percent. Amber Henry continued to make improvement and was just seven seconds behind Sarah. There are few things we need to tweak before the Conference meet in two weeks."
The next actions for both the WSU men and women are the Big Sky Conference championships on Saturday, October 30th in Cheney, Washington.
