OGDEN — Police are searching for the culprits in a grave stone robbery that cost an Ogden cemetery more than $5,000.
Employees of the Evergreen Memorial Cemetery at 100 N. Monroe Blvd. noticed the missing pieces of the grave stones around 5 p.m. Monday. Five of the bronze markers that were to be placed on the headstones had been stolen along with a type of garden tiller.
Police believe the thefts happened sometime between Sunday after 6:30 p.m. and Monday afternoon, Ogden Police Lt. Eric Young said.
The bronze markers were in or nearby a storage shed on cemetery grounds and police say the pieces most likely were taken to be resold, Young said.
Officials have investigated local scrap yards to see if the metal pieces were sold but say it's possible the thieves will break down the metal for other purposes.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Ogden detectives at 801-629-8228.
