High school sports: Preps of the Week

MACK MORRISON, American Fork, cross country

This fantastic junior runner has been shining brightly on a team filled with stars.

The Cavemen, in search of a national championship later this fall, boast two bonafide superstars in Austin West and Clayton Young, so attention can often be hard to come by for the rest of their runners.

But Morrison has been getting attention for his ability to stick with West and Young in practice and in meets, and he pulled off a big win at the Region 4 championships last weekend, as he edged Young. (West didn't participate as he's currently sidelined with an injury but hopes to be back for the end of the season.)

"That was a really nice win for him," said American Fork coach Timo Mostert.

ANNE FITZGERALD, Wasatch, soccer

This senior striker has been doing precisely what she's been doing the past two years — she's scoring goals in bunches.

Fitzgerald found the back of the net 18 times during a prolific junior season last fall, and she has topped that goal total this season as she scored her 19th goal of 2010 last week.

Her team struggled during the early stages of the season, but she was a major reason why the Wasps won five of their final six games to secure second place in Region 10. As a result, Wasatch will host North Sanpete in the opening round of the 3A tournament this week.

A very talented finisher, Fitzergald helps make everyone else around her better, according to Wasatch coach Dawain Wheatley.
