CROSS COUNTRY: At Costa Mesa, Calif., the Griffins completed in the Vanguard Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The men's team finished 14th while the women's team recorded a 12th-place result. The men ran an 8K course while the women's race was on a 5K course.
The men were led by Oliver Lange with a time of 28:05. Lange finished in 59th-place and was 20 seconds ahead of David Sondrup in 65th position.
Jef Marsicola placed 80th with his time of 29:02 while Tyler Gregg finished 83rd after running 29:12. The Griffins had 318 total points and averaged a time of 28:59 over the 8K course.
"The guys were too aggressive up front," head coach Craig Binkley said. "I feel the guys could have run a lot better."
Katrina England paced the women's team with a 55th-place result behind her time of 20:29. Ellie Layman finished 65th with her time of 20:50 and was followed in 80th position at 21:15. Kara Peters was 81st after running 21:16. Westminster totaled 321 points and ran the 5K course in an average time of 21:19.
"I was fairly pleased with the women," Binkley stated. "One through four ran a pretty good race and I was happy with that and that Katrina took a huge step up for her."
Westminster will return to action on Oct. 23 at the Warrior Invitational hosted by Lewis-Clark State College.
MEN'S SOCCER: At Omaha, Neb., a goal in the 10th minute by freshman Ryan Beasley was enough to give No. 25 Bellevue University men's soccer team a 1-0 shutout over Westminster College Saturday afternoon at Tranquility Park.
The Bruins improved to 8-3 on the season, picking up their third-straight win. Westminster fell to 8-5 overall.
Beasley scored at 9:55 with a shot from six yards out in the box following a pass down the right sideline from Emmanuel Pena (Bellevue, Neb.). Alex Zimmer (Bellevue, Neb.) and Pena were both credited with the assist.
Senior Sebastian Narvaez (Cali, Colombia) recorded his fifth shutout of the season, while recording three saves, playing all 90 minutes in goal to improve to 7-3 on the season. Bellevue outshot the Griffins 14-6 and held a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal. Westminster will now travel to Hastings, Neb., to face fourth-ranked Hastings College on Sunday at 5:30 p.m.
