Soon we will see the demolition of the historic Cinedome 70 theater in Riverdale. Recently, I was given the opportunity to tour the abandoned theater because of the graciousness of the Larry H. Miller Group. Though everything in the structure was in disarray and the building couldn't have been further from being viable, something about the Cinedome spoke to me. Beneath the crumbling ceiling in the lobby I could still see and hear the crowds coming to the great movies that were once shown there.
I believe that the theater is still an important landmark, even though many would prefer to write it off as "just another movie theater." When it comes to buildings, it's impossible for something to be around for 40 years and not have any significance. The tremendous support the building received as a result of my Save the Cinedome movement showed that there was still love for a theater that has been vacant since 2001.
I appreciate and am thankful for the opportunity to have gone through the theater. I no longer believe that the Larry H. Miller Group is going to be harmful to the community of Riverdale. They're going to provide the community with what it's been lacking since the theater closed nearly 10 years ago.
That being said, the theater is still standing and filled with historical artifacts. I would love to see the Miller Group preserve these relics somehow because we're never going to see another theater like the Cinedome 70.
