NOVA plans all-Russian program

Series opens season with music from the 20th, 21st centuries

The NOVA Chamber Music Series opens its 2010-11 season on Oct. 17 with an all-Russian program that features music from the 20th and 21st centuries.

Works to be played are three pieces by Igor Stravinsky: "Suite italienne," for cello and piano; "Elegy" for solo viola; and "Duo Concertante," for violin and piano; Sophia Gubaidulina's "Meditation on the Bach Choral 'Vor Deinen Thron tret ich hiermit;" and Dmitri Shostakovich's Piano Quintet in C minor, op. 57.

Playing this concert are Utah Symphony colleagues David Langr and Yuki MacQueen, violin; Roberta Zalkind, viola; Corbin Johnston, bass; and Jason Hardink, harpsichord and piano. They'll be joined by violinst Kathy Langr; cellist Noriko Kishi; and pianist Karlyn Bond.

Concerts start at 3 p.m. and take place in Libby Gardner Concert Hall. Tickets are $82 for a general admission season pass, and $70 for a senior citizen season pass.

Individual tickets are $18 general admission, $15 senior citizens, $5 students. They can be purchased at the door. For more information log on to the series' website at novachambermusicseries.org.

Nov. 14: Schumann, Curtis-Smith, Norman.

Jan. 16, 2011: Beethoven.

Feb. 13, 2011: Biber, Bach, Ricks, Brahms.

March 13, 2011: Gabrieli, Berio, Gesualdo.

April 17, 2011: Schubert.
