SALT LAKE CITY — The driver of a motor scooter died around 3 p.m. Saturday after colliding with a car at 1300 East and 3200 South (Brickyard Road).
Salt Lake City Police Sgt. Robin Snyder said the driver of the car, a 19-year-old male, was traveling north on 1300 East. He was in the middle of making a left turn onto Brickyard Road when the man on the motor scooter, who was traveling south, hit the passenger side of the car, Snyder said.
The motor scooter rider, Nicholas S. Kennedy, 29, of Sandy, suffered severe head trauma and died at the scene. He had a helmet, but it was on the back of his scooter at the time of the accident, Snyder said.
"We will never know if the helmet would have saved his life," Snyder said, "but he did have a lot of head trauma, and a helmet sure would have helped."
The driver of the car did not suffer any injuries, but Snyder said the 19-year-old was "very traumatized at the scene and was very cooperative with police."
She said police are still trying to determine who was at fault.
