The world renowned Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet will open Weber State University's 2010-11 concert series on Oct. 9. The performance starts at 7:30 p.m. and takes place in Allred Theater on the WSU campus.

Among the most famous woodwind groups in the world today, the ensemble was formed in 1988 by the first chair members of the Berlin Philharmonic during the final years of Herbert von Karajan's tenure as music director.

With four original members and a new bassoonist, who succeeded the original player last year, the group has toured the world playing works that represents the far reaching repertoire of woodwind literature.

The five musicians have given concerts throughout North and South America, Europe, Israel, Australia and the Far East. They've also appeared at a number of prestigious festivals, including the Berliner Festwochen, the Edinburgh Festival, the London Proms and the Salzburg Festival.

Their program for Saturday's concert is: Anton Reicha, Quintet, op. 88, no. 5; Pavel Haas, Quintet, op. 10; Samuel Barber, "Summer Music," op. 31; and Carl Nielsen's Wind Quintet.
