LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON — Two Sandy men were flown to local hospitals in critical condition after the driver of a speeding car lost control and crashed in Little Cottonwood Canyon on Sunday, police said.
Witnesses reported the 24- and 27-year-old men were traveling west at a high rate of speed and weaving in and out of traffic while passing other vehicles.
The vehicle nearly hit another vehicle head-on before swerving quickly to the right causing the driver to lose control, Unified Police Lt. Don Hutson said.
The vehicle swerved back toward on-coming traffic before going off the road into a ravine.
Emergency responders transported the victims, who were both conscious and breathing at the scene, by medical helicopter to the University Hospital in Salt Lake City and Intermountain Medical Center in Murray with significant trauma.
Officials said there are no indications drugs or alcohol were involved, but noted this was the second accident involving speeding vehicles in the canyons in the past week. On Thursday, a vehicle traveling in Big Cottonwood Canyon veered off the road, killing one occupant and critically injuring the other.
"We want to encourage people to be very careful going down the canyon because it's very easy to gain excessive speed without noticing it," Hutson said.
