The Chamber Music Society of Salt Lake City starts it new season Wednesday with a return appearance by the Brentano Quartet. On the program is Joseph Haydn's Quartet in F major, op. 77, no. 2; Ludwig van Beethoven's Quartet in E flat major, op. 127; and, with guest violist Hsin-Yun Huang, Felix Mendelssohn's Quintet in A major, op. 18.
The Brentano Quartet was formed in 1992, and went through its first personnel change in 1998 when cellist Nina Lee joined the group.
They have a wide ranging repertoire, spanning music by such renaissance composers as Carlo Gesualdo and Josquin des Prez to 21st century works by Elliott Carter, Charles Wuorinen, Steven Mackey and Gy?gy Kurtág.
They've also performed with renowned artists including soprano Jessye Norman and pianists Richard Goode and Mitsuko Uchida.
The foursome has toured extensively throughout the United States, Europe, Japan and Australia, performing in some of the most prestigious halls in the world, including Alice Tully Hall in New York, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Konzerthaus in Vienna.
The Brentano has also recorded quite a few CDs over the years.
Among their albums are the complete op. 71 quartets by Haydn, and an album of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart works with Huang. They've also recorded music by Mackey and Wuorinen.
